On October 18, experts from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development OECD) visited Eco Baltia Ltd. Group recycling of secondary raw materials plant Nordic Plast Ltd. in Olaine. During the visit, the OECD experts got acquainted with the work of Nordic Plast, the production process, as well as discussed the challenges in the industry.
"Recycling of secondary raw materials is an industry that is rapidly developing all over the world and we are pleased to be innovators in this field in Latvia and the Baltics. Despite the challenges of the local and global market, we have been able to grow steadily and create competitive products for the international market. 97% of our products are exported. Next year we plan new investments in modernization of the plant and technologies to increase production capacity and develop new high-value products, " comments Andris Trumars, director of Nordic Plast Ltd.
During the visit the OECD experts appreciated the work of the plant and the technology used. During the meeting the main challenges in the sector, including the Latvian environmental management policy were discussed. A.Trumars emphasized that in the internal market one of the most pressing problem is the availability of raw materials and their quality. A wider state support is needed for the creation and improvement of waste sorting lines, so that a larger amount of raw materials would be segregated from the municipal waste stream and it would have a higher quality.
Nordic Plast Ltd. recycles used polyethylene LDPE films and HDPE hard plastic products. The plant is located in Olaine and employs more than 100 employees. The company produces ~ 7000 tons of finished products per year which are exported to six countries.
